Marianne Faithfull – ‘As Tears Go By’ (1965)

POP. At the moment I am reading the beautiful miss Faithfull’s autobiography Faithfull so I’m all Marianne right now. So what could be more fitting than her breakthrough-song ‘As Tears Go By’, written specifically for her in the mid 60’s by the glimmer twins; Sir Mick Jagger and the outlandish Keith Richards. And for those who do not know these two heads they are the heart and soul of the greatest rock & roll band in-the-world; The Rolling Stones. Funny story is that this was the first song the partners had ever written and composed themselves. In Marianne’s book the story goes that their manager at the time; flamboyant Andrew Loog Oldham, locked them into the kitchen of their Chelsea apartment and told them they had to come up with a song before they could be let out. According to Faithfull he put it like this: “I want a song with brick walls all around it, high windows and no sex.” And so they came up with this pretty and indeed very innocent, non-sexual little song.
